Why we offer this to you...
After we have tasted the Cuvee Anonyme we were shown a "strange" bottle with no vintage declaration called La Reserve. That got us curious. What made us even more curious is that this wine is made of 3 different excellent vintages of their flag ship wine Cuvee Anonyme. We have not seen that before.
What we tasted then was a blast! The days and weeks of finding the right ratio between the three vintages does not only require a perfect palate but also patience and courage. Let us tell you we are not alone in saying that this paid off very well and created possibly one of the best wines in the region.
This is what Robert Parker says:
"A new non-vintage wine that's made from a blend of the top barrels of the Cuvee Anonyme from 2007 (43%), 2009 (21%) and 2010 (36%), the 2012 Chateauneuf du Pape La Reserve VII IX X is an hedonistic and decadent release that dishes out massive amounts of black raspberry, raspberry, spice cake, licorice and crushed flower like nuances on the nose. Gorgeously full-bodied and textured on the palate, yet with remarkable freshness and purity, this layered, incredible wine should last for 15+ years. Drink now-2028."
Enjoy it with strong cheeses, game dishes or meat in sauce
What does it taste like ...
On the nose the wine suprises with new layers every time you smell it. Black berries, red berries, vanilla, licorice pepper to just name a few scents we detected. You can probably spend an evening finding more if you were not too curious to taste it.
On the palate the wine delivers what you would expect from a top league wine. Body, Body and more Body. The tannins in this wine are very well structured - present but yet smooth. The finish of this wine seems to never end.
What is it made of ...
Incredible passion and a perfect palate!
It is impossible to give grape percentages as this cuvee originates from collections vines where different grapes types are planted together. The powerful body of this wine relies on over a hundred years old Grenache, complemented by very old Vaccarèse , Counoise, Mourvèdre, Cinsault , Black Terret , Muscardin.
These are the vintages which were used:
The amazing 2007 (43% of the blend) was mainly characterized by saltiness, with 7 weeks of Mistral, climate had a predominant effect on the profile of this wine.
2009 (21% of the blend) was a more characterized by a specific sweetness, it was the true expression of the varietals with opulent fruitness. (Each grape type has a specific minerality).
Acidity was the main fundamental flavor of the 2010's, (36% of the blend) direct result of the soil expression
Ageing in French oak barrels 18 to 36 months depending on vintages
